Home Assistant, the most active open-source project on GitHub, has launched Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2, a new USB adapter that can seamlessly connect any Z-Wave smart home device to Home Assistant.

Though Home Assistant has supported Z-Wave for many years, the Connect ZWA-2 is the first Z-Wave hardware explicitly designed by the Home Assistant team for seamless integration. The antenna and base are precisely tuned to Z-Wave’s ideal wavelength, working in harmony to provide a reliable connection and maximize range.

Paulus Schoutsen, founder of Home Assistant, said:

“We all have that one thing at home we wish was smarter, but it always felt just a little too far away. With Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2, your smart home can go further than ever before, connecting devices across your home and even beyond. It’s the ultimate way to connect Z-Wave devices to Home Assistant.

“Home Assistant supports a lot of different smart home standards, and while Z-Wave may be a couple of decades old, it has many strengths. Connect ZWA-2 makes the most of those strengths with its optimized antenna and support for the new Z-Wave Long Range standard. We want to breathe new life into this standard and keep the millions of Z-Wave devices in people’s homes working great far into the future.”

It’s designed to be easy to get started with. Just plug the USB cable from your Connect ZWA-2 into your Home Assistant system, and a helpful wizard will get you started. If you already use Z-Wave with Home Assistant, plugging in Connect ZWA-2 will initiate a wizard that allows you to quickly migrate from most other Z-Wave adapters.

Connect ZWA-2 is Z-Wave certified and includes the latest Z-Wave 800-series chipset. This, combined with Home Assistant’s industry-leading Z-Wave software, supports all Z-Wave devices. Included is the newest iteration of the standard, Z-Wave Long Range, which delivers more reliable, responsive connections to very far away devices, and improved battery life (Long Range is currently only available in North America and Europe).

Connect ZWA-2 marks the second generation of Home Assistant’s Connect line (the first generation included a Zigbee and Thread adapter called the Connect ZBT-1). This second generation is focused on being the most performant and open design while looking great in the home. Home Assistant is in the midst of a major expansion to its Connect line, which focuses on building high-quality hardware that links devices of all kinds to the platform.
